Early Signs of Glaucoma

man being treated for Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a singular word for a group of diseases that damage your optic nerve. It is often caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye. Unfortunately, many forms of glaucoma usually have no warning signs. Instead, the change is gradual and can remain undetected. What’s more, while glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60, it can occur at any age.

If you believe you are suffering from glaucoma, Dr. Palomino and The Vision Place in San Antonio will make sure that you get the personalized care needed to treat the disease.

The Different Types of Glaucoma

To understand the early signs of glaucoma, you need to understand there are different types of the disease.

  • Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of the disease. It happens so slowly some patients lose vision before they’re aware of a problem.
  • Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the iris bulges, which may happen suddenly or gradually. This stops fluid from circulating through the eye, creating an increase in pressure.
  • Normal-tension glaucoma happens when your optic nerve becomes damaged even though eye pressure is normal.

The Signs of Glaucoma You May Be Aware Of

Open-angle glaucoma may cause patchy blind spots in your vision early on. It is much different than angle-closure glaucoma, which may cause eye pain, blurred vision, debilitating headaches, nausea and vomiting, and more. This should be treated as a medical emergency, and you should seek medical attention immediately.

Risk Factors

Because glaucoma can cause damage before any symptoms are apparent, we urge patients to be aware of the risk factors and to make routine visits to an optometrist. Risks include: having a family history of glaucoma, having high internal eye pressure, and having certain medical conditions such as heart disease or high blood pressure. During an exam, Dr. Palomino can examine your eyes for vision issues or any other eye related problem.
