Hand Sanitizer Causing Harm to Eyes

With the increased use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer, there has been an increase of chemical injuries to the eyes, especially in children according to a recent study. The increased risk to children is mainly due to dispensers of hand sanitizers being placed at waist level for adults as this is at eye level for children. Keep in mind there are also risks for adults with hand- to- eye exposure causing chemical burns to the eye. Be extra careful not to touch eyes after use of hand sanitizer. For those that use contact lenses, this is extremely important as the contact lens can absorb the chemical and lengthen the exposure to the eye.

If there is exposure, you will feel burning and stinging, But Do Not Rub eyes, as this can cause more damage. Do rinse the eyes with water for about 10 minutes.

If you experience any change in your vision, please contact your eye doctor at The Vision Place immediately. If not handled properly, it can lead to damage of the eye.
