When Contacts Become Complicated
Many people who seek contact lenses as an alternative to glasses do just fine with standard “off the rack” soft contacts. These products are very good at correcting mild to moderate refractive errors such as simple nearsightedness or farsightedness. But once additional complicating factors enter the picture, the limitations of standard soft contacts make them a less useful choice. For instance:
- If you’re prone to an eyelid inflammation called giant papillary conjunctivitis, your eyes are unusually sensitive to the proteins that tend to stick to soft lenses’ surfaces.
- If you have astigmatism, specific parts of your corneas require correction — a tricky problem for regular contacts, which tend to rotate as you blink.
- Presbyopia and strong prescriptions may call for more accurate correction than soft contacts can offer.
- Dry eye can make regular contact lenses too irritating to wear.
- Deformations of the cornea, such as the cone-like shape seen in keratoconus, can confound soft contacts in all but the mildest cases.
Our optometrist can evaluate your needs during a contact lens exam. In this exam, we not only take measurements of your eye structures to ensure a good contact lens fit, but we also consider your current ocular health and degree of refractive error. If you have an issue that is likely to yield sub-standard performance from standard contacts, then we will recommend the specialized contact lenses that best suit your condition.
A Variety of Specialized Lens Options at The Vision Place
The Vision Place is the ideal place to come for those “hard to fit” contact lenses. Our eye doctor can help you select from a variety of specialized lens options. We offer:
- Gas permeable (GP) lenses that maintain a constant shape for optimal vision correction with less protein accumulation for patients with giant papillary conjunctivitis
- Toric contacts, which are specially ballasted so they won’t rotate on astigmatic eyes
- Multifocal contacts for presbyopia, with corrective fields for multiple distances ranges
- Scleral contact lenses, which vault over corneas afflicted with keratoconus while also providing a tear reservoir for dry eye sufferers
