Your eyes may have a few built-in safeguards in the form of tear ducts, eyelids and so on, but there isn’t much they can do to protect themselves against major eye diseases and vision disorders. Eye Exams
Yearly eye exams are important for numerous reasons. Vision commonly changes from year to year, so it’s important to have your vision checked on an annual basis. We even offer a 15% discount for new Patients!
Prescribing and fitting patients for eyeglasses and contact lenses are at the core of what we do. But it’s not the only important thing we do!
Even if you have 20/20 vision, there are other important reasons to get a yearly exam from an optometrist. Dr. Palomino is a specialist in many of these conditions.
When to See Our Timberwood Park and San Antonio Optometrist for an Eye Exam
Many people aren’t sure when or how often to schedule eye exams. As a safe rule of thumb, if you haven’t had an eye exam in over a year, it’s time to see our Timberwood Park and San Antonio optometrist. If you’re a senior and/or you’re under treatment for a serious eye disease, you may need more frequent eye exams. (Babies and toddlers are an exception; pediatric exams are usually scheduled at 6 months, 3 years of age and kindergarten/first grade.)
The simple eye tests offered by a school nurse or the DMV cannot be compared to a comprehensive exam from our optometrist in San Antonio. Comprehensive eye and vision testing includes:
- Eye health testing – Some of the most destructive eye diseases can cause progressive eye damage without any early symptoms. Our eye health tests employ advanced diagnostic techniques to check the fluid pressure inside your eye (high pressure may indicate glaucoma), examine your retinas and optic nerves, and check the lenses and corneas for disease or damage. We highly recommend pupil dilation for eye health evaluation, since it lets us see much more of the inside of the eye.
- Eye function testing – If your eyes and brain aren’t working as a team, you may suffer vision problems. We can run a variety of tests to evaluate your color perception, binocular vision (depth perception), eye teaming, eye focusing power, eye dominance and eye alignment. If our Timberwood Park and San Antonio optometrist discovers an eye function problem, vision therapy, corrective lenses and other techniques can help put you back on the road to clear vision.
- Vision testing – The traditional vision exam in which you read lines of text on an eye chart is extremely useful for evaluating refractive errors such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, ambylopia and presbyopia. If your eyes are having trouble with a specific “distance,” our San Antonio and Timberwood Park eye doctor can use a device called a phoropter to clarify the images, one adjustment at a time, until we’ve arrived at your corrective lens prescription.
